Where We Are

Canoe Kent operate in the county of Kent, which is the area south of London, between the city and the English Channel. The waterways we paddle the most are the River Medway, the River Stour and the Hythe Military Canal.

The River Medway is navigable from the town of Tonbridge north-eastwards for around 50 miles, passing Maidstone, Rochester and Chatham on its way to the Medway Estuary and the Isle of Sheppey, where it meets the North Sea. All of these towns are within an hour’s train or car ride of Central London.

The River Stour is at its most scenic just east of Canterbury (famous for its Cathedral), between the village of Fordwich and Stodmarsh Nature Reserve at Grove Ferry. We can also arrange multi day trips that start at Fordwich and continue to the English Channel. The HS1 train takes less than an hour from London Kings Cross station to Canterbury West Station.

The Hythe Military Canal begins in Hythe and continues for around 28 miles to Fairlight, taking in the ancient town of Rye en-route. It’s a 90 minute car journey from Central London to Hythe; the launch point at West Hythe is just 15 minutes off the M20, the launch at Ham Street about 20 minutes further on.

All of these waterways are well served by the M20 and M2 motorways and the bus and train network (we offer free pick up services from the nearest train stations to all of our launch points. Contact us to find out the nearest station to your own launch point). If you are flying into London we are easily reached by public transport, and if you are arriving by ferry into Dover then welcome, you’re already here!

Send an email or give us a call if you experience any difficulties in arranging transport to any of our launch points and we’ll try to help you out.

Wild, Tranquil & Creative Adventures

in the Garden of England

Your Lead Guide will be Dave Wise. Dave is a B.C.U. qualified canoeist and also the author of 15 travel writing and photography books, over 130 films and numerous magazine articles. All the photographs that you see on this website have been taken by Dave whilst out canoeing in Kent. He has explored over 70 of the world’s countries (many of them on foot, in a canoe or on horseback), was part of the small team that made the first canoe descent of the Lemmonjoki River in Finland in 2002 and has had many years experience of paddling the waterways of South-East England. In 2012 Dave spent 6 weeks camping on an island in the Medway estuary, surviving largely on the wild plants and fish he found there.
